    About the standard

The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) was originally developed by Control Union Certifications in 2008 and ownership was passed to the Textile Exchange on 1 January 2011. The GRS is intended to meet the needs of companies looking to verify the recycled content of their products (both finished and intermediate) and to verify responsible social, environmental and chemical practices in their production.

Key Requirements of the Global Recycled Standard (GRS)

The purpose of the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is to define requirements that ensure accurate content claims, uphold good working conditions, and minimize harmful environmental and chemical impacts. GRS is an international certification standard that verifies the reliability of recycled content in products while promoting responsible and sustainable production practices that consider both environmental and social aspects. GRS applies to companies involved throughout the supply chain, including raw material producers, recyclers, spinning, weaving and knitting, dyeing and printing, and garment manufacturing. To obtain GRS certification, organizations are required to meet the following criteria.

    – Products (both finished goods and intermediate products) must contain at least 20% recycled material – The recycled origin of materials must be verified through third-party certification

    – Clear and transparent management of the entire supply chain, from material collection to final product – Systems must be in place to prevent the mixing or misuse of certified and non-certified materials

    – Implementation of environmental management practices related to wastewater, waste, and energy use – Continuous efforts to reduce environmental impact throughout production processes

    – Restrictions on the use of hazardous chemicals that may harm human health or the environment – Proper chemical management and documentation in accordance with international standards

    – Prohibition of child labor and forced labor – Ensuring worker health and safety, fair working hours, and appropriate wages – Maintenance of a safe and ethical working environment in line with international labor standards

    – Annual audits conducted by accredited certification bodies – Objective verification of compliance with GRS requirements
